The Band

The Bobs Your Uncle Band started out as a musical duo consisting of Cory Fite and Jeff Newland around 1996. The two friends and musicians had been playing and recording their original music together for 30 years by that time. Cory played guitar, bass, keyboards, and vocals as well as being a world renown recording Pro Tools engineer, producer, and excellent song writer. Jeff Newland played guitar, bass, sang vocals and was an accomplished song writer as well. Both musicians had been in many various Bands prior from garage to professional and developed many long-term relationships with players and members of the music industry. The name “Bobs Your Uncle” is a popular British/ Australian phrase meaning “there you have it or there it is”, the equivalent phrase in America would be “There you go”. They both agreed and christened the name and there you have it!

The bands’ goal was to showcase all the original material Cory and Jeff had created together in the past years as well as do their own versions of other artists’ music live. They started out playing in small venues, bars, restaurants, and private functions. After a year or so they were fortunate enough to bring their friend John “Buzz” Baker into the band as their percussionist ,drummer and background vocalist. It was now a trio. As the band played occasional live gigs Cory and Jeff continued writing new music and soon, they had a catalog of over 40 recorded songs to choose from. It was here that they decided to ask friends whom they had recorded with or knew, to sit in and play with the band whenever they were around.  People used to say “you never know who is going to show up for a Bob's Your Uncle concert”....

Jeff Newland, in his own words

Born in Culver City Ca. in 1955, Jeff Newland blamed the Beatles for getting him interested in the guitar.

“I was 9 years old and really wanted to play ‘Day Tripper’ by the Beatles. My Grandma bought me an inexpensive Decca guitar at the grocery store and that’s where it all started. Not only did I learn ‘Day Tripper’, but I never thought something with 6 strings would be with me my entire life.

In 5th grade we started a garage band with a couple kids on my block called Iron Horse which would end up playing at my 6th grade graduation ceremony. In the 7th grade we formed another garage band called Jess Bay, which played YMCA dances and most of the Air Force bases around Sacramento.

In high school I joined the Bella Vista High School Marching band as a drummer and played all 4 years. I then joined the Concert band and then the jazz band as a bass guitar player.”

Buzz Baker in His Own Words

I started playing in school programs with my family as a very young student.  All 7 us played an instrument. My dad being a music teacher taught all of us beginning instrument lessons.  I was playing jazz gigs with my mom and dad's dance band at 15 years old.

I’ve had four different drum teachers over the ensuing years. I play all styles of music -  Jazz, Rock, Rhythm and Blues, Country, Funk - you name it.  My time spent charting and playing music with some of the best musicians in my home town of Sacramento has truly been the most wonderful part of my life. Figure 60 plus years of drumming.

I’ve also had the pleasure of recording on 7 plus albums with at least five original song writers!!    (Life is grand! Better with music!)  I’ll be 72 years old soon and am still actively playing with some wonderful musicians.  Thank you all.       Buzz

A Tribute to Cory Fite: 1954-2021

Cory Fite was born on May 30th, 1954, in Pomona, California.   He moved to Elk Grove, California at the age of nine. His musical career started as a teenager, as well as his fascination with anything electronic, which inspired his interest in collecting and rebuilding antique radios throughout his lifetime.

His passion for the San Francisco Giants Baseball team and black Labrador Retrievers were anchored by a wonderful family at home in Elk Grove. Cory taught himself guitar, drums, bass guitar and all keyboards.

In time he became a very accomplished vocalist, songwriter, arranger and producer utilizing all his musical talents. We are not sure where all his humor and comic genius came from, but it entertained everyone his entire life.
